SARAH
RUSS
is a composer, accompanist, and
educator who grew up in Silverton, British Columbia, the smallest
incorporated village in this Canadian province. Influenced by
her parents’ frequent violin and guitar playing, she began her piano
lessons at the age of eight. At sixteen, she moved to Kelowna,
BC and kicked off her career as an accompanist by playing for her
high school choir.
After graduating from the University of British Columbia in
1996, Sarah gained employment as an accompanist, and later on as
an instructor and fine arts leader, at the Shadbolt Centre for
the Arts in Burnaby, BC. Her role as pianist involves backing
up instrumental and vocal recitals and, most notably, playing
live for ballet classes. In this setting, she is called upon to
provide suitable music for all levels of instruction and for
each exercise in a given dance curriculum.
Further contributions to the dance department at the Shadbolt
Centre include composing music for the annual ballet
performances, a task requiring sensitivity to dance phrasing and
choreographic themes. Dances have also been created to suit her
previously composed music, which ranges from the lyrical to the
dramatic. Once the inspiration arises, Sarah devotes herself
passionately to the completion of a project, never resting until
she is satisfied with each note placed on the page.
